Middle School Blogging

I want to have my Middle School students "blog" with classmates at other schools on a local, state, national and international level. I am concerned with safety issues, so I am looking for any advice from colleagues who have already begun such a program or are in the process of implementing one.

We have just begun blogging with our middle and high school students this year after a year or so of looking at our options. There are a lot of options available to you if you want to keep your blogs private and protected.

We are using 21Classes this year because of the total control it offers over the student accounts, if necessary; however, we also looked at Blogger because it can restrict access to only those registered for the blog.

One of the best moves we made in this process, which is still very young, was our openness with the parents of the students involved. We outlined what we were doing in a letter home and invited any interested parents to the blog or wiki.

Patrick,

That's fantastic that you are able to have your middle and high school students blog. I would like to use a blog in my classroom at some point and am also looking for guidance.

Who was involved in the yearlong review of options? Were there any guidelines/restrictions on blogging as spelled out in your district's acceptable use policy?

Thanks,

Norm
